Planning My Fall Wardrobe

Each year I try to be intentional with my purchases, and each year I still end up buying pieces I regret. Planning a wardrobe can be tricky, but the more I practice the easier it becomes. This year I’ve become the most intentional when planning my fall wardrobe.

We are almost at the time to sip on mulled wine, watch the changing of the leaves and bring out the cashmere sweaters. Fall is one of my favorite times of the year not only for all things pumpkin spice and apple pie, but also because there are endless layering opportunities. But this year I’m in a space feeling a bit blah about my wardrobe. My closet feels like its lacking variety in shapes and colors and also just variety overall. But I want to make sure that each piece I add to my wardrobe is filling those specific problems, and that I’m not just buying blindly. Which is why planning my fall wardrobe is such a necessity to keep me on track to creating the wardrobe I want.

COLOR PALETTE
While in summer I focused on lighter neutrals like cream and white, for fall I want to go a bit darker with the neutrals. Chocolate browns and camel hues are my focus while planning my fall wardrobe, and just feel so luxurious for the colder months. And the best part is because these are all in the neutral color family, they seamlessly match with what is already in my closet.

SHAPES
I’m sure many are in the same camp as me, wanting to put the skinny styles aside for a bit. I love the chic look of a wide legged pair of dress pants. Though it has been a struggle to find a pair from a more responsible brand, I’m still on the hunt. While I want to add new shapes to my clothing, I also want to introduce some new shapes in my shoe collection. Mules and slingback are all over my wishlist, along with adding a few pairs of boots in those chocolate brown and camel colors.

FABRICS
Hands down my favorite fabric to wrap my body in when the temperature drops is cashmere. I used to feel like cashmere was out of reach for me due to the often hefty price tag. But brands like Naadam, Quince and Everlane have made owning cashmere much more affordable. While I’m tempted to only buy cashmere, wool is a no-brainer for pieces like dress pants, blazers and coats. I continue to stay away from synthetic fabrics, not only because they are awful for the environment, but also because they don’t feel as luxurious as natural fibers on the skin.

I’d love to hear if you also plan out your wardrobe for the seasons. Are there any tips or tricks you’ve discovered?
