Summer can be a challenging season. We’ve had everything from hot and humid, to rainy and just plain chilly. Having some summer wardrobe essential pieces can help you transition when the weather can’t make up its mind. Essentials also act as a great base for capsule wardrobes or for those who are rebuilding their wardrobe. These 12 pieces are a great start, and could literally be a mini capsule for summer on their own.
Essential Pieces:
LINEN BLAZER – The perfect summer layer in a breathable material that will keep you warm on chilly summer nights or protect you from a freezing plane when traveling. You could go for any color of linen, but cream and beige are perfect for those who have summer wardrobes with lighter neutral palettes. WHITE BUTTON DOWN – This piece is really a year round staple, but in warmer weather you want to stick to lighter cotton or linen versions. You can also use an oversized version as a great beach coverup. I found mine preloved from BA&SH, but a check out this linen or cotton option.
COTTON TANK – Great on its own or layered under another piece, you can’t go wrong with a cotton tank. I have Everlane’s Air Cami, but there are truly endless options to choose from.
WASHABLE SILK TOP – I’m obsessed with this Quince top in washable silk. It’s perfect for when you want something a bit more dressed up than say a cotton top, but doesn’t feel too dressy. Having a piece like this in your wardrobe will take you from day to night and is perfect for the office.
DENIM – Of course denim is in the mix. These are Everlane’s The Curvy Cheeky Straight Leg Jean in the raw hem. I prefer either cream or lighter blue denim in the warmer months. Even though summer can get very humid, its great to have a pair of trusted denim in case of colder temps or to wear traveling from home to your destination.
LINEN SHORTS – These Fabiana Filippi shorts are perfection with the higher waist and looser fit on my thighs. The fit makes them feel dressier than an average short and the linen keeps them lightweight even though they are black. If you are in balmy weather during the summer, stick to looser but well constructed shorts in lighter fabrics like linen or cotton. I found these preloved, but these are a close dupe.
SILK TANK – This is the perfect piece that is dressy and sexy without being over the top. I love mixing it with the linen shorts or the denim to keep that casual/dressy mix. Mine happens to be actual lingerie, found randomly at a TJMaxx, but you can find a similar version here or here.
SUNGLASSES – Always a must, especially in sunny months to protect your eyes. These are a tortoiseshell design from Bvlgari, but any pair that are comfortable are a great option.
BEIGE BELT – My obsession continues with my Clinch belts. It’s such a versatile belt that can be worn on the hips or waist and easily dresses up any outfit. Look for a statement belt if you are looking for an accessory that can take your outfit up a notch.
PURSE – My Louis Vuitton Croisette has been the perfect addition to my summer wardrobe. Not only do the colors work with my lighter neutral palette for the warmer months, but with both a top handle and crossbody strap, this purse can go from day to night.
WHITE SNEAKERS – A comfortable sneaker that also looks good?! Say no more! Sometimes you just need a comfortable shoe to wear, and these Veja Campo sneakers are a great option. White sneakers will literally go with anything in your closet, and is also a great shoe when traveling.
BEIGE SLIDES – A perfect summer sandal that, just like a white sneaker, will go with everything in your closet. Even better if you can find a pair with some support to them. My Tod slides are preloved, but these are a similar pair.
